BAN ON NOISE-MAKING TAKES EFFECT: ACCRA TO BE SILENT FOR A MONTH

One month ban on Noise-making in Accra has taken effect from today, Monday, 8th May 2017, in accordance to customs of the Ga people, whose ancestral land Accra forms part of. 

Residents of Accra Central, heart of Ghana's Capital and largest city, are accordingly barred from drumming, whistling, clapping, playing loud music and engaging in activities that may bring about noise.

The Ban on Noise-Making, affords traditional priests and priestesses congenial time to fast and pray for the betterment of Ga and its people.

Accra residents are encouraged, in times like this, to also fast, pray and reflect on ways to better their lives.

The one month period, also, sees to the planting and harvesting of millet(Nmaa), for the celebration of the annual Ga(Mashie) Homowo festival in August.

ENFORCEMENT OF THE BAN

In collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, the Ga Traditional Council has constituted a Task Force to patrol and ensure compliance.

The Ga Traditional Council has also appealed to various religious institutions on its land to adhere to customs of the land, so as to curtail confrontations.

The GTC, had earlier indicated, that, any institution or person who flouts the ban shall strongly be dealt with by appropriate authorities.

AREAS TO BE AFFECTED
For the avoidance of doubt, therefore, the ban by the Ga Traditional Council, which takes effect from 8th May 2017, affects residents of Ga Mashie(Accra Central) and all smaller settlements that fall under its authority.

Some of these areas are;
A. ACCRA METROPOLIS: Korle Gonnor, Kaneshie, Sukura, Korle Bu, Mamprobi, Dansoman, Glefe, Gbegbeyisee, Kaneshie and nearby communities.

B. GA SOUTH MUNICIPALITY: Weija, Borteanor, Aplaku, Odupongkpeehe(Kasoa), Dormeabra, Dankyira, Oshie, Malam, Gbawe and nearby communities.

C. GA CENTRAL MUNICIPALITY;
Santa Maria, Sowutuom, Anyaa, Awoshie, Nii Boi Town, Kwashiman, Kwashibu, Hong Kong Ablekuma, Awoshie and neighbouring communities.

D. GA WEST MUNICIPALITY: Obom, Amasaman, Ofankor, Medie, Pokuase, Oduman, Ashalaja, Ayikai Doboro, Adjen Kotoku, and their neighbouring communities.

E. GA EAST MUNICIPALITY: Dome, Kwabenya, Ashongman and neighbouring communities.

The ban shall be lifted on 8th June 2017. Gamashi  Homowo is slated for Saturday 12th August 2017.

The other Principal Ga Towns, Osu, La, Teshie, Nungua, Tema, Kpone and Ningo shall soon also take their turn to place similar bans on noise making ahead of the Homowo festival in August.
